James T. Lantrip

I have been working on updating the cemetery list and making notations about family relationships. While looking up information I came across the following regarding James T. Lantrip. As far as I can tell, with just a little research, he has no family ties to the cemetery other than his burial here.

Information about James Thomas Lantrip: James Thomas LANTRIP, born 26 Nov 1844 in Tennessee, was the son of Ambrose H. and Lucy Lantrip. When the Civil War erupted James, who was only16, joined Capt. J. B. Ward's Co., 5th Regt. Tennessee Volunteers 25 May 1861, to fight for the Confederate cause. The regiment was organized for state service 20 May 1861. The Company Muster Roll shows this remark: "Deserted from Memphis in May 1861." J.T. Lantrip next appears on the Company Muster Roll for Co. E, 15th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. He was enrolled in this regiment 8 Jun 1861 by W. H. Carroll for 12 months. The 15th, also known as Charles M. Carroll's Infantry, was organized at Jackson, Tennessee during May and early June 1861. Not long afterwards the regiment was moved to Union City, Tennessee, and then on to New Madrid, Missouri. It was mustered into Confederate service at New Madrid in mid-August 1861, and assigned to duty in the Western Department. 745 officers and enlisted men were members of this unit. Co. E, nicknamed the Madrid Bend Guards; were all men from Lake County, Tennessee. New Madrid and nearby Island No. 10 were Confederate strongholds along the Mississippi River, along with Columbus, Kentucky, their "Gibraltar of the West", some 60 miles upriver. 7 Nov 1861 James' unit saw action in Belmont, Missouri, located directly across the Mississippi from Columbus. Both these towns were held by the Confederates. General Grant, in a surprise move, attempted to gain control of Belmont in order to gain a strong point to attack Columbus. Although successful in his attack, Grant retreated in good order after Confederate reinforcements arrived. Grant reported 184 killed, wounded or missing. For the Confederates it was over 2,000. April 6 and 7, 1862 the 15th participated in the Battle of Shiloh. However, from Jan 1 thru Jun 1862 J. T. Lantrip's name appears on the Company Roll as "absent sick in hospital". Jas. T. Lantrip's name appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War for Co. E, 15 Regt. TN as "Where captured...Jackson (TN)" "When captured...July 24,1862" and "When paroled...July 24, 1862". This is all that is available from his records, the fact that he was "absent sick" from Jan thru Jun, and that he was paroled on the same day that he was captured, we can assume that James was physically unfit for duty at the time of his capture. J. T. Lantrip's name appears on the Company Roll for the 8th (Duff's) Regt. Mississippi Cavalry for Jan 1 to May 11, 1864 with the following remark: "Deserted from Panola 1st Fed, 1864."

14 Nov 1866 James Lantrip was appointed Constable of a new precinct in Kilgore, Gregg Co., Texas. James was secretary of Danville F & AM Lodge 101 in Kilgore, Texas (from letter written by R. W. Wynn, W. Master, dated 5 Jul 1879). The 1880 census for Gregg Co., Texas lists: James Thomas Lantrip 35 engineer, Hulda 28, Dora 12, and Ernst 7. The 1900 census lists James and his family in Rusk Co., Texas. The 1910 census lists him as "an engraver of stationary".

Burials in the Hunt Cemetery

The following is a copy from Mary Frank Dunn's book and is a listing of those
buried in the cemetery at the time of printing in 1980.

Originally published in the East Texas Family Records, Volume 4,
Number 2, Summer 1980, by East Texas Genealogical Society.

HUNT CEMETERY - Rusk County, TX

Submitted by Mary Frank Dunn, Route 2, Box 190, Henderson, Tx. 75652.

Hunt Cemetery is located in Rusk County, Texas east of Henderson. It
is off the beaten path and in sylvan surroundings. It is one of the
older burying arounds that is still preserved and in use.

The Hunt familv arrived in Rusk County March 10, 1851, having come
from Blount County, Tennessee. The patriarch of the Hunt migration was
Thomas Hunt Sr., born about 1787 and who died in Rusk County in 1858.
Carved initials on ironstone rocks mark most of the older graves.
"T.H." on one rock in the center of the cemeterv surely marks the grave
of Thomas Hunt, Sr.

Thomas Hunt, Sr., and wife, Lucy, accompanied by several married sons
and daughters were in the trek to Texas. Sons, Thomas Jr. and William
(Billy) Hunt remained in Rusk County. Absolom Hunt went to Nacogdoches
County, and others moved further west.

The cemetery was said to have been started the nxxt year after the
arrival of the family, but the name of the person dying that vear has
not been preserved. The wife of Thomas Hunt Jr. died Julv 28, 1856,
and seems to be the oldest recorded death date. She was Mary (Finley)
Hunt.

An older cemetery was located on lower ground a short distance east of
the Hunt Cemeterv. It is at the old Pine Springs Baptist church,
which came to be called "Greasv Kitchen." The Hunt family gave one
acre of land on the top of the hill because they considered the 1ower
location undesirable.

John Davis Leopard

John Davis Leopard of Rusk County, Texas, was a potter and made ribbon cane syrup. The Depot Museum in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas, has three or four of the clay jugs made by John Leopard. At the museum is a syrup mill that was owned by John. It is still operating today during the Syrup Festival in Henderson the second Saturday of November each year. Go to this site to see the syrup mill. This Syrup Festival is a fine event if anyone is close enough to attend. The museum also has pottery made by John Hunt.

John D. Leopard is my great, great grandfather. John Hunt is brother to my great grandfather, Thomas Hunt, Jr, who married Nancy Leopard, daughter of John.
